Root Cause Failure Analysis for Refractory Dry Out (RDO) Explosion at CFPP Tarahan-PLN
Location
Tarahan, Lampung
Date
2021
Project type
Technical Study [Member's Portofolio]
The Root Cause Failure Analysis for Refractory Dry Out (RDO) Explosion at CFPP Tarahan was a project undertaken for PLN, focusing on investigating the causes of a significant explosion incident at the coal-fired power plant. This mechanical engineering project aimed to determine the underlying factors leading to the explosion, which posed a serious risk to both the safety of the facility and its operational efficiency. Addressing such issues was crucial for maintaining the plant's performance and ensuring the safety of its operations.
A key member from PT Geni Buana Nusantara played an integral role in this project by conducting a detailed analysis of the RDO explosion using Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations, supported by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools. This approach allowed for an in-depth study of the fluid dynamics and heat transfer processes involved in the explosion. Based on the findings, the member developed conclusions and provided strategic recommendations for preventing similar incidents in the future, including potential design modifications and operational improvements aimed at enhancing the overall safety and reliability of the power plant’s refractory dry out process.
